A Worn Path By Eudora Welty And The First Seven Years

Love Case In the stories â€Å"A Worn Path† by Eudora Welty and â€Å"The First Seven Years† by Bernard Malamud characters persevere for love. In â€Å"A Worn Path† Phoenix Jackson, an old grandmother, goes through a long journey and overcomes multiple obstacles to get medicine for her sick grandson. Phoenix perseveres through emotional and physical trials because of her love for her grandson. Likewise in the story â€Å"The First Seven Years† Sobel perseveres for seven years of unfair pay to try and marry his love, while Feld perseveres to make his daughters life better than his own. Both of these stories exemplify that humans will go to great lengths for the ones that they love. Sobel perseveres through seven years of hard work and bad pay because of his love for Miriam. Sobel worked overtime often running the shoe store by himself while the owner, Feld, would go â€Å"home after an hour or two†(Malamud 51). Despite Sobel’s hard work he received terrible pay to the point that even the owner told him he should leave and receive better wages. â€Å"Yet his conscious bothered him for not insisting that the assistant accept better wage than he was getting, though Feld had honestly told him he could earn a handsome salary elsewhere, or maybe opened a place of his own†(Malamud 51). Sobel knew that he was being paid unfairly for the hours that he worked, but he insisted on staying because he loved Miriam. â€Å"‘For the stingy wages I sacrificed five years of my life so you could have to eat and drink and where to sleep?’ ‘Then for what’ shouted the shoemaker. ‘For Miriam’†(Malamud 53). Even after working five years to try and be accepted by Feld and marry Miriam when Feld insists that Sobel wait two more years Sobel agrees in a heartbeat. â€Å"But the next morning, when the shoemaker arrived, heavy-hearted, to open the store, he saw he needn’t come, for his assistant was already seated at the last, pounding leather for his love†(Malamud 54). Meriweather Lewis (1774) and William Clark (1770) are famously known for their expedition through the Louisiana territory to the coast of the Pacific, along with Sacagawea from the Shoshone tribe. They traveled down the Ohio River, up the Missouri River, across the Continental Divide, and to the Pacific Ocean. In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson sent the Cords of Discovery to the land never traveled before by any American to explore. Yet to catch a glimpse of Socratic pedagogy, we must first sift through the intricacies of dialogue. Thus, we stumble upon a problem: how should we read these passages on education? For example the compulsory drug test scheme in schools or broadcast some television announcement, those policies gives us a bad image of taking drug and negatively labels the drug abuser. Cannabis considered to be drug in Hong Kong, therefore the public consider smoke cannabis is deviant. However, since cannabis is legalized in Netherland people no longer view smoke cannabis as deviant. It shows that a deviant act can be committed in one society that breaks a social norm there, but may be normal for another society. The case above shows the dominant group has power to decide what is deviant and acceptable, not due to the act itself, but the reaction to the act. To a large extent, this perspective be applied to this case. The next case is fraud and abuse of Comprehensive Social Security Assistance(CSSA). First of all CSSA is providing a safety net for those who cannot support themselves financially, but some people defraud CSSA by hiding the income and escape from reporting properties, financial assets or wealth, for those who defraud or misuse CSSA the society view their action is deviance and even view CSSA Fraud is Criminal Offence. First is corporal punishment, in the past especially in Chinese society corporal punishment considered as teaching their child, this action was normal to everybody. However, corporal punishment is not acceptable nowadays; it considered was child abuse and even illegal; this example proves deviance is a relative idea; it can be changed from time to time. The second example is monogamy VS polygamy. In Hong Kong or western country, the custom or practice being married to only one husband or wife, man or woman who has more than one husband or wife considered be deviance. However, in some country like Libya or Qatar, polygamy is acceptable; it shows deviance is relative idea and it can be changed from culture or culture. There is one more example about deviance can be changed by loads of factors. In term of age, people would not consider a three years old kid steal candy from shop as deviance but a forty years old man. It proves deviance can be changed by a lot of factor. To sum up my view of deviance, it is affirms cultural values and norms, clarifies moral boundaries, promotes social unity and encourages social change. However deviance is a relative idea which differs from different period of time in the same culture or even from culture to culture. It can be affected by loads of factors such as gender, age , time et cetera. The dominant group has power to decide what is deviant and acceptable, therefore it is not about the action itself. In labeling theory, people usually negatively label minorities or those seen as deviant from standard cultural norms and the reaction of majorities is to label the person as having offended against their social or moral norms of behavior. It causes further deviance due to the people who are labeled cannot escape from the label and do it accordingly called secondary deviance. The two main types of dance during the Renaissance were Court dance, and Peasant dancing. Court dances were done for entertainment and more complex, the courtiers would hire dance masters to come up with some new dances. Peasant dancing was usually not for entertainment UT Just for the fun of dancing! These dances danced by the peasants were called Simple dances, were with lots of people and usually done in a circle or two lines. There are different types of dances came form Italy, France and England. There were different styles in different places; in Italy they had the Bases witch is a dance were the dancers stay low to the ground with no Jumps and leaps. There are two main types of Bases, which are La Sprang and Real. Another Italian Dance is the Ball; witch is more active and expressive. There were Jumps and leaps in this dance and he most popular Jumps were high in the air. It was more complicated and included steps from Absence, Collaterals, and the Viva. There were many tempo changes too. Then there are dances from England like the canary dance witch is one of the most complex dances. It originated in Spain. It is a native dance from the Canary Islands. The dance is usually done with couples and it is danced in a fast triple time. Another dance form England is the Allemande; witch shows the widest variation in their descriptions. Steps are basic and unique. It is a line dance, danced by many peoples with the ladies standing to the right of the man in this type of dance. It is a dance done in double time. It usually has a forward movement. The steps consist of a series of double steps and one pair of single steps. Last but not least are the dances from France like the Brenan, the word Brenan comes from the French word Brander that means to swing side to side. They called it this because many of the steps go from side to side. This is one of the first dances that are taught because the steps are simple and easy. It is danced in 4/4 time. The Brenan is usually danced in groups in the form of a circle or chain where the dancers hold hands and move together in a sideways motion. I have two other types of Dances, but I was not able to find out were they were from they were the Pave; witch is a well know dance. It is danced in 2/2 time. It consists of two simple steps and one double step forward and then two simple steps and one double step backward. It was a professional dance where the dancers walked in pairs with the lady on the right of the man. The other on is the Gaillardia witch is a solo dance that is very complex. It is full of variations of fast steps and high Jumps. This can also be danced in couples using a series of sideway steps, turns and hops. It is a triple meter and a lively dance. P The most important part of all these dances was the footwork, because a lot of the people had bulky clothing on the upper part of the body so they could not move there upper part of there body as much. As I was watching some videos of Renaissance Dance I was able to notice it is difference is some of the dances have a lot of Jumps and leaps in the air. Later, King Louis XIV established the first Academia Royal De Dance. In the courts the couple dances of The Minuet and the Waltz began to show the freedom and expression of the Renascence times. In addition to the formal dances in the courts, the Renaissance saw an increase in country dancing outside of the fancy dances of the courts.
