The Daily PANCE and PANRE Question Two
Which term is used to describe the characteristic concave or "spoon-shaped" nails of iron deficiency anemia? leukonychia koilonychia clubbing onycholysis paronychia Answer:B Koilonychia Koilonychiais a spoon-shaping of the nail itself. It is usually a result of iron deficiency anemia. Leukonychia is often associated with hypoalbuminemia that causes partial or complete white discoloration of the nails. Leukonychia may also appear as a rare side effect of systemic chemotherapy in some oncological patients but may also be present with arsenic poisoning, renal failure pneumonia, or heart disease. Clubbing of the nails is an actual thickening or elevation of the nail bed - it is a sign of a release of TNF associated with pulmonary disorders (tissue necrosis factor) typically found in bronchiectasis, lung cancers and cystic fibrosis (the nails are NOT necessarily cyanotic.) Onycholysis is a painless separation of the nail from the nail bed. Several or all nails are usually affected - there are many causes. Paronychia is an infection of the nail bed and nail margin, usually from trauma or more commonly, nail-biting. Lynn Reid, PA-C Dear Stephen, I just want to take a moment and let you know how much I appreciate your website and the resources that you have made available to us. As I started preparing for my PANRE I realized it was going to take more than just reading the NCCPA blueprint topic areas. For the last 6 years I focused on being a mom and I chose to push the pause button on my PA career. I am thrilled to say that I passed my PANRE and this was possible because of your question style reviews and testing. This has been my favorite method to prepare for recertification. Ive taken the PANRE 3 times in the last 20 years and this time around I would not have been ready without thePAlife. Thank you for creating a great site thats affordable!! Aida Scanlon PA-C Firstly, thank you. I take my boards tomorrow and was a mess until à I reviewed your exams.à The humor was great and really helped to ease my tension.à Keep up the great work! Marilyn OteroPA-C Im a PA student graduating in December and taking my PANCE about 4 weeks from now. Your website has become one of my favorite study tools, so thanks for all your work in putting that together! Caitlin Anderson, PA-S I love your site! Im recertifying soon and your site is so incredibly helpful. Ive been a PA in a niche area for most of my career, so recertifying is always an issue. Thank goodness I found your site!! Kimberly Bastible, MS, PRA-C Stephen, Just wanted to let you know that I am enjoying your site very much and believe it is helping more than any other site Ive used thus-far (I have done HippoPA, not bad, and Brian Wallaces site). Will study some more, dont feel ready yet! Im an older PA, practiced for 18 years, have done the at home board tests the last two. I am nervous about taking the test center exam! Thanks again for your site, and the best to you! Rebecca Lynch, PA-C Just letting you know I PASSED my boards. Thank you so so very much for the advise. May the Lord Almighty continue to bless you real good. Manyi PA-C Thanks for creating the PA life. It has been a great resource for me as I review for my PANRE. à I am recommending the website to my PA staff. Cheriee Slobodsky, MPH, PA-C Good morning. I purchased a three-month trial of SMARTYPANCE with the hopes of using it as an adjunct to other study materials that I had purchased. Almost immediately, I ditched everything else and used your website exclusively. I work full time and I have two little ones at home, so just like everyone else, it was hard for me to manage my time. My certification is ending this year and I timed it so that if I didnââ¬â¢t pass, Iââ¬â¢d have another opportunity to re-take it in December if I failed. I just found out this morning that I passed my PANRE! I studied for one {stressful} month, and though I wouldnââ¬â¢t advise cramming everything in such a short period of time, your website really helped me so much. Thank you for putting all of this content out there for us. You are amazing! Jenssen Parungao, PA-C
